NEW MIXED-USE URBAN DESIGN ROJECT IN HISTORIC BARRACK OF MASHAD (DIDGAH PROJECT) ( 2012)
A 200 H. BARRACK WAS BUILT IN OUTSKIRT OF THE CITY OF MASHAD ABOUT 100 YEARS AGO. NOW, THROUGH THE EXPANSION OF THE CITY, THE BARRACK IS LOCATED ADJACENT TO THE CENTER OF THE CITY AND CLOSE TO THE HOLY SHRINE.
THE BARRACK HAS PLENTY OF OPEN SPACES, GREEN AREA, OLD BUILDINGS, WITHIN AN ACCESS NETWORK WITH OLD TREES ALONG THEM. THE IDEA OF THE PROJECT WAS TO PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT WITH PLENTY OF OPEN SPACES WITHIN THE DENSED AREA OF THE CITY CENTER, AND FROM THE OTHER HAND TO FULLY CONNECT THE NEW DEVELOPMENT WITH THE MAIN STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS OF THE CITY IN ORDER TO INTEGRATE THE NEW DEVELOPMENT WITH THE CITY CENTER AND OTHER PART OF THE CITY, AS WELL AS ENRICHING AND EMPORING THE STRUCTURE OF THE CITY.
THE MAN SPINE OF THE BARRCK WITH THE MOST EXISTING OPEN/GREEN SPACES KEPT AS THE PUBCIC CORRIDOR OF THIS DEVELOPMENT, ALONG WITH COMMERCIAL/ OFFICE TOWERS WITH RESTAURANT, RECREATIONAL AND CULTRAL ACTIVITIES ON THEIR GROUND AND UPPER FLOOR. THE MEDIUM DENSITY RESIDENTIAL AREA ARE LOCATED IN THE LOWER PART OF THE BARRACK, ADJACENT TO THE EXISTING NEIGHBOURING RESIDENTIAL AREA.
